  • Notes
    • From Ancestral File (TM), data as of 2 January 1996.

Birthplace also noted as Leistershire, England.

      Baptized and endowed during life
Baptism date also noted as 14 Sept 1857

Had been sick for three months and died in child birth along with the infant daughter Emily. Emily was buried in mother's arms.

History of Tooele County-DUP by Annie Elizabeth Adams Gillespie (Mary's daughter) states that Mary was born in Leistershire, England. Joined the Latter-Day Saints with her parents and brother Benjammin and emigrated to America, leaving Liverpool on 28 March 1857 on the ship "George Washington." She was listed as "age 23 Spinster" on the emigration list. From Council Bluffs, She and her dear friends Sarah Cross and Ann James pulled handcarts across the plains in the Israel Evans Company. They wore handcart harnesses, which were according to custom, but became so exhausted they would fall to the ground when the camp stopped to rest. Ann James would pray over Mary asking God to give this frail sould the physical power and courage to reach Zion. With prayer and great effort, Mary arrived in the valley September 12, 1857, but the rest of her life she carried the scars of the harness straps.
Two days after arriving in Utah, Mary went to Tooele and married her sweetheart from England, John Adams. They lived in a log cabin at the corner of Third South and Second West. (this has been replaced by a rock house in the same location)
