Info he gave to Endowment House records show: him baptized 1850
his mother as Margaret Davies

Was residing with widowed mother at Haycrest at time of baptism.
Birthplace also noted as Haycrus, Shropshire, England.

Was a farmer

Heard of the Gospel and was baptized by Elder Richard Howells in 1851 or 52. Was working for John Beddoes at the time and stayed for 4 years. John commented that he had never worked for a better man in his life. Working for Mr. Beddoes allowed John to save money to get to America. Left home on 4th of March 1854 for America. Set sail from Liverpool on the "John M. Wood" and went to New Orleans; then up the Mississippi River to St. Louis; then up the Missouri River to Kansas City and from there to Salt Lake City with the Doctor Richardson's Company, arriving on 29 September with ox teams.

Went to Tooele and was rebaptized March 10 by Elder John Shields. Ordained under the hands of James Benan, a member of the Forty Third quorum of Seventies. Rebaptized by Lysandars Gee in the Refamashon on March 23, 1857.
Married to Mary Howells on 14 September by John Shields; both were endowed 18 March 1865 and married by Elder G. G. Canon.

During the period of famine in Tooele, John was so weak from hunger that "he was required to support himself by holding on to the fences while walking down the street. As he passes the home of Henry Green, Sister Green noticed his condition and inquired if he was ill. He answered that his problem was hunger. She invited him into her house and gave him a meal of bread and milk.

John was asigned to watch over the homes and help take care of the crops of his neighbors in Tooele who had gone to Lehi before the arrival of Johnston's Army in 1858. His principle assignment was to watch for a smoke signal which was to be lit at the point of the mountain near the south shore of the Great Salt Lake which would notify the watchman in Tooele Valley that Johnston's Army had violated the terms of their agreement to proceed peacefully through the streets of Salt Lake City, without molesting the homes or property of the Saints, and to camp outside of the city's boundaries.
Should the smoke signal be given the men on guard were to burn everything combustible thus preventing anything of value from falling into the hands of their enemies (Gillespie, Alex R., John Adams, F 161 #6, Church Historian's Office, SLC, Utah)
