BURI PLAC Tooele City Cemetary, Tooele

Joined LDS 1 July 1843 and emigrated to America on the "Zetland" arriving in 1848. The family arrived in Salt Lake September 25, 1849 and moved to Tooele in 1850.

Was a carpenter and farmer (see photo of wood plane & Bible). Around 1862, there was a famine in the Tooele area. "People went to Thomas in the late fall and winter to buy bread-stuff, but he refused to sell it, but the next spring when they needed seed wheat Father Atkin had some to let them have. Whereas, if he had sold it the fall and winter before there would have been no seed wheat to plant. Brother Atkin knew that this would be the case so he very wisely kept the wheat for seed." (Early Tooele, Vol.1,1849-1853,p.39 by George Tripp)

He remembered the year 1855 as being a difficult one:
"Our crops this season were almost a complete failure on account of scarcity of water to irrigate with and the visit of clouds of grasshoppers which swept off almost everything green in the fields, gardens and on the prairies". (Atkin,Thomas, Jou F. 559, Church Historian's Office,SLC)
